how about permissions? have you got permissions to open /dev/sr1?
and as far as I remember you'd need to be root or have correct CAPability
.. quoting DOCS/DVD:

Note that according to my experiences, disc authentication requires root
privileges so you must run MPlayer as root! (see section 'Problems').
"
