 Simple.  Put  'bpp=16'  in  ~/.mplayer/config  and  you're set. Or, get
fbset, and write a wrapper like:
 #!/bin/sh
 fbset some-other-than-default-mode
 mplayer $@
 fbset our-original-mode

 Bear  in  mind, that I fiddled with fb.modes, and have a lot of strange
modes for playing. (320x240 and such). Get  a  calculator,  or  modeline
utility, and calculate it for your card.
