[Mplayer-users] can't play VCDs

first problem is here. you are using alsa 0.5 with oss emulation. RTFM.

it doesn't matter.

yes, alsa 0.5 buffering is buggy when using in oss emu mode.

i think that your cdrom is too slow. if you burn it as file, then kernel
caching helps. but using in SVCD mode no cache at all.

this, combined with buggy alsa results bad things.

another possible problem if the svcd is bad, i mean wrong format.
is that playable by other players in svcd form?
