yes, it's really broken.
The  major difference between ?zap and mplayer's stream reading code is 
(or was
at the time) that the dvr device is opened in non-blocking code in 
mplayer,  in order
to prevent blocking.
This weekend I'll provide you a patch to see if using a blocking mode 
can fix this issue.
