not all resolutions are supported: IIRC the good ones are the ones with 
x=320 | 704 | 720, y=240 | 288 | 480 | 576
aspect ratios 4/3 or 16/9, so that funny 352:540 couldn't be played

read the line above: mplayer dropped more than 50 frames and is about to 
0.5 desync between
audio and video. This means that timestamps are too far apart, 
consequently soon you begin to see
sound but video slows down until it freezes completely. This is what 
causes all these problems.
It's a problem that to me happens when watching disturbed channels, but 
I was unable to fix it yet
