ah, now it's clear. It was only that I wasn't understanding what  you 
want to do.
I don't know the v4l api, but if  you say that xawtv and tvtime can read 
the video device
there are chances mplayer can, too. I don't know if mplayer's  tv code  
can  work that way
currently , you should ask Alex Beregsazi or -dev-eng
