I don't know, but there was a discussion on the dbd mailinglist.
Maybe Klaus can say more about this.

Yes I know, but I have a digital amplifier and a soundcard with digital
out (Hoontech 4DWave NX).
Vdr and dvdplayer have a commandline option where you can specify a
programm, which gives the ac3data direct to the amplifier.
