I know i'm late, but still...
If you are looking for a lean editor to quickly edit
utf-8 check out leafpad. It's a GTK2 editor (no dependency
on gnome!) and can eat all character sets i've ever thorwn
at it. Not to mention that it can use all GTK2 input methods,
so it's possible to enter even raw unicode strings if needed
(given you have scim or something similar installed).
