So, I'm seeing a 40% improvement on amd64 Linux.

Yes, if you like. Such as:

* numerous moderate improvements to MPEG-4 encoding quality

Michael and Loren have done interesting stuff to Snow, as well (in
particular all the OBMC stuff), but I haven't had a chance to test it.
