Agree, goal set in mind while writing was to save ppl as many 
questions/googling as possible. However you're the pros do whatever suits 
your goal/philosophy.

Yes. I have no explanation for this. Could be something with my 
setup/configuration. Maybe when KDE starts it initializes /dev/dsp in a 
certain way, or loads some sound modules. I'd be happy to provide any output 
that would help explain this.
