the IEC approved kibi and mebi (and so on...) (IEC TC 25) prefix for 1024bit and 1024*1024bit, but i think these are a little obscure and not widely^W used... so IEEE said in the end that kilo (k) and mega (m) would by standard anyway mean 1000 and 1000000, except for sentences in which could mean 1024*...
so for the K versus k is only a matter of clarity, nothing standardized, i was wrong on that point.
but i suggest so use the capital for K=1024 (M=1024*1024), or use k (m) in every place, and let the reader understand.
but on the other thing i'm right: ANSI/IEEE 260.1-1993 defines b = bit and B = Byte (or byte, indeed the capital of this word should not be important, but bit must be not capital).
