FWIW, I'd probably like to have that exact sentiment expressed -
'codecs.conf can cause problems and is intended for use only by
developers. If you do not intend to get involved in developing MPlayer,
it cannot do you any good and should be deleted.', or the like.

The first half of this sounds like a good suggestion - it would be nice
to be able to have MPlayer report (perhaps with -v) the location of the
codecs.conf it's using, although almost certainly no message should be
printed if none is found. I would, however, probably oppose the deletion
suggestion; except in extraordinary circumstances (crashes and such), I
expect MPlayer to give me status reports, not 'helpful advice'. Being
able to tell which file you're using should be enough, since the rest
can be taken care of in the documentation.
