Patch rejected.  I agree that it's inconsistent, but the current way
it fits the description:

  You can specify codec specific encoding parameters using the  following
  syntax:

  -<codec>opts <option1[=value],option2,...>

  Where <codec> may be: lavc, xvidenc, divx4, lame, toolame, x264enc
