could you tell me more about this?

for me freetype is a library that renders truetype fonts....
when i get a ttf file, i can simply use it in linux, i don't have to
specify any encoding anywhere (gnome/kde/openoffice)....

so when does someone have to use that switch?

 Sets  the font encoding.  When set to 'unicode', all the glyphs from
the font
 file will be rendered and unicode will be used (default: unicode).
"
imho this should be reformulated...well..first i will have to understand
what that switch does, and then can i propose some other description,
but i am pretty sure the current one is not understandable...
and one more time: what is "unicode" as an encoding ?  :))))
