<h1>Binary Codecs for MPlayer</h1>
<p>
	See the <a href="../../homepage/codecs-status.html">codec status table</a>
	for the daily generated list of currently supported codecs.<br>
	Instructions for installing and using codecs can be found in the
	<a href="../../DOCS/HTML/en/codecs.html">codec section</a>
	of our documentation.
</p>

<p>
	If you want to verify the integrity of the codec packages, compare the
	<a href="../../MPlayer/releases/codecs/MD5SUMS">MD5 sums</a>.
</p>

<h2 name="disclaimer">Disclaimer</h2>
<p>
	There is absolutely no warranty of any kind for these codec packages.
	Copyrights of all DLLs remain with their respective owner(s). You should
	be aware that some of these DLLs have licenses that restrict them to use
	with certain programs. We only distribute them, the rest is your
	responsibility.
</p>

<h2 name="faq">Codecs FAQ: Which package(s) should I get?</h2>
<p>
	First of all, a big warning: these packages are useless for normal Windows
	players (like WMP, QuickTime, RealPlayer, ...)<br>
	The packages contains only the DLLs required by MPlayer, with no installer,
	.inf files, and other stuff needed to use them in Windows.
</p>

<p>
	If you run <b>Linux on an x86</b> processor, you should grab the
	<a href="../../MPlayer/releases/codecs/essential-20040704.tar.bz2">essential codec package</a>.
	It includes every working codec that is not implemented natively, like
	Windows Media 9, newer Real Audio/Video, Quicktime QDM2 audio, and a lot
	of other less common formats.<br>
	You will surely miss some important features of MPlayer without this codec
	package.
</p>

<p>
	If you run another <b>Unix system on x86</b> processor (like *BSD), the
	<a href="../../MPlayer/releases/codecs/essential-20040704.tar.bz2">essential codec package</a>
	is probably the best choice for you.<br>
	If your system cannot manage Linux libraries, you should replace the Linux
	Real codecs (*.so.6) with the
	<a href="../../MPlayer/releases/codecs/rp9codecs-win32-20040626.tar.bz2">Win32 version</a>.
	Just put them together with the other codecs from the essential package.
</p>

<p>
	If you run <b>MPlayer on Windows</b>, it will try to use the codecs already
	installed on your system; but to avoid installing every known codec and to
	be sure that the version you are using is the one we tested, you can download
	the
	<a href="../../MPlayer/releases/codecs/essential-20040704.tar.bz2">essential codec package</a>
	and the
	<a href="../../MPlayer/releases/codecs/rp9codecs-win32-20040626.tar.bz2">RealPlayer 9 Win32 package</a>.<br>
	Remove the Linux codecs (*.so.6), they do not work on Windows.
</p>

<p>
	If your processor is <b>not x86</b>, try to get all codec packages for your
	processor/operating system.<br>
	You should be able to get Real, Indeo (via XAnim codecs) and, on some systems,
	QuickTime. You won't get Windows Media 9 and all the obscure formats supported
	only via Win32 DLLs.
</p>
