Nevertheless it _is_ a difference, just like -, -- and --- in LaTeX.
Convert the man page to postscript, you'll see a difference then or
just grab a random book from your shelf and check out that the dash in
look-alike and - whatever - are not the same length.  Of course you
will not see a difference in a pager on the console since ASCII only
has one -.
