I tried this:

mplayer -vo -fixed-vo -playlist pl1

where the playlist contained the same video twice, and it worked.

I also tried

mplayer -vo -fixed-vo -playlist pl2

where the playlist contained two different videos, and it also worked.

I accept that my system and its fx5200 card are now too old for the 
nouveau developers, since nvidia seems to come out with new cards often 
which require their limited resources.  You can see the issues I have 
had in RedHat BZ745202.
