I don't really have much time right now to do all the through test - I
have to checkout & rebuild fresh mplayer for start, make sure it's debug
version, that I compile it with english language so you won't get
confused at russian etc. Just wanted to do quick check on what this
option does and unfortunately it crashes mplayer when used with -fs :(

Sorry, this is post is "too long" and probably more or less useless, but who
knows, maybe you'll see something useful. Like I said, I'll try to provide more
details tomorrow or day after that.

When playing exactly the same video which original question was about
(and same karaoke subtitles as I posted to ML in January 2011):

Another interesting fact is that if I press 'q' as mplayer starts, it
works even in fullscreen. I can actually see a frame appearing even
before mplayer exits. Note that original crash happened with '0' frames
played.

After I installed all these debuginfos (what a dependency hell, Mesa/Gallium
built with LLVM requires like 600 Mb more  debuginfo..), it actually stopped
crashing with -fs but started to crash all the time without -fs >.<
(it doesn't crash as long as at least one filter is used - be that ass or
scale, but with -vf-clr it tends to crash EITHER in fullscreen or windowed mode
"all the time" depending on PC mood, until mood changes and type of crash is
reverted. System feels 100% stable otherwise).
