As far as I'm aware, vo_direct3d doesn't do EOSD rendering, and falls
back to vf_ass. (I hacked that into vo_direct3d in my personal
repository, though.)

That kind of thing should probably be left to a specialized library,
similar to libswscale etc., except that no such library exists yet.
