We spoke about this at VDD.  I sent a draft patch a long time ago that
used staged configures, i.e.  it ran ./ffmpeg/configure at the end of
./configure.  Reimar rejected it as it was slightly less flexible wrt
FFmpeg options back then.

The situation that exists now is completely crazy IMNSHO.  A very sizable
chunk of MPlayer dev effort is spent on duplicating and synchronizing
FFmpeg build system changes.  On top of that, most of the time detection
is not ported, but values are just hardcoded ...
