Well, that's what is there already: the mp3lib fork as included code
and the libmpg123 binding. The starting topic of this thread was if
mp3lib can be dropped.

Well, I agree in principle. But, since I already invested time in
getting the test setup running, I really would like to know why the
largely identical mp3lib code is compiled into more efficient binaries.

I don't want people accusing me of dropping some useful enhancement
present in mp3lib but not current mpg123 proper. Especially when I
don't understand where it comes from:-/

In practice, people don't bother that much with mp3 decoding
performance nowadays, I suppose, but as mpg123 maintainer I do bother;-)
