I feared that. There is a distinct penalty when using libmpg123 from
MPlayer, which might be glossed over in the SSE case because the speed
of the SSE code in mpg123 is improved.

I remember doing some profiling that revealed that when used from
MPlayer, the CPU time of libmpg123 internal decdoding functions
increases. Also, I had some funny effects about changing some code line
in MPlayer having a big impact on performance through code alignment,
probably.

There have been posts to this list about this, but I don't think we
arrived at a final conclusion. Have to dig out the thread again... will
try to this evening.
