The progress must be visible by default.
It uses status_line verbosity, so -quiet should be enough.

I don't see any fundamental flaws in the patch, but I haven't tested it either.
It seems to handle the case where final size is not known in advance too.

If Reimar doesn't review and commit it, I'll try to do that over the weekend.
(but don't tell that to reimar;)
