It seems -vf il would handle half-screens being re-interlaced, but
full-screen images being interleaved with appropriate offset for each
eye (what this patch does) seems to be beyond it.

Truth be told, I didn't notice that -vf il existed, but in hind-sight,
it seems this still isn't redundant (and, as you say, it's pretty
simple, and, IMHO, in the original spirit of the stereo3d plugin).
