My more critical patch has proven to be unexpectedly controversial.
However, I believe this patch is perfectly innocuous, safe, and useful.
 So, if someone could commit this one at least, that would be appreciated.

I've attached it again here, for clarity - and in case the signature I
included with my original e-mail threw anyone off.  I've updated it to
be diffed off the current version of subversion (r33876) - though the
original patch I sent still works fine as well.
