FFmpeg does releases these days, so what's the problem on requiring the
latest FFmpeg release (0.6 at this time)?

I guess 0.6 lacks some revisions that mplayer relies on. Well, we can
try again with 0.7 (I'm starting to work on that), or try to get the
missing revisions integrated in 0.6.2.
