I have no remarks on the rest of your message, but I think there is need for
some caution for this point: I have tested a few tools to decode SPU
subtitles on a lot of sources (the lavc decoder, mplayer, vobsub2pgm,
spuumux), and I have noticed a lot of situations where some of these tools
fail to decode, or even completely see, some packets while others succeed.

Unfortunately, I did not keep exact track of these situations. I will in the
future.

But in the current situation, dropping mplayer's internal implementation in
favor of the lavc decoder would cause regressions.
