Any particularly bad issue?
E.g. I think it's okay to just remove the GUI code from mp_msg, but I wasn't
able to find any other significant GUI code under CONFIG_GUI _except_ a huge
load in vo.

Did I? I remember it more like it being acceptable to drop it.
However the "complexity and ugliness" right now don't feel like
an issue to me _right now_.

Maintain so to make it competitive? No. Slowly build it back, all the while
making sure other GUIs gain the features it has but aren't exposed (e.g. via
slave mode), maybe.
