Actually I think that's the preferable way.
Just to clarify, what I'd ideally like to have is
1) A check that in some way fails with old versions, so that compilation
   (in the future) does not fail just because someone has an old distro
   version installed they don't even want to use with MPlayer!
2) Since we'll probably for quite some time require a rather recent version,
   a not-detected failure message that indicates so. Giving a specific
   version we require if we know it, or just saying "only latest git
   version supported" or so.

No objections, the point is just to let users know that, so we don't
get questions on -users for about every second person that tries it.
Well, many won't read the message anyway, but if they don't we at least
have justification to flame :-)
