Is there agreement on that? Is there then be a chance that it gets
merged?

I think there wouldn't be much need for making it time-based,
as it's not necessary to get the output exactly x times a second,
but rather to simply decrease the amount of output.
And making the status output completely time based
and not frame based would mean a rewrite.

What I think I could do is to make e.g. a second
_highest_ output frequency. That would in deed enable us
to set a more sane default.

For now I'll attach the version that includes support for mencoder.
