The trouble is, both moving to git and the changes you're making are
apparently at least somewhat controversial. Tying each one to the other
makes them both less likely to be accepted, not more.

Someone who might prefer to use git rather than SVN might object to the
changes in your git tree, and so object to switching over to that as the
"official" mainline. On the reverse, someone who likes your changes
might be resistant to the idea of switching to git. This makes achieving
something like consensus on either one significantly harder to achieve.

If you want either one to happen, you should not be pushing to have the
other one happen as part and parcel of the same move. Get either
accepted first, and when that move has been completed, the barrier to
similar acceptance of the other will be lower than the barrier to
acceptance of both as one package - and, even if the other never gets
accepted, you'll at least have achieved part of your goal and reduced
the magnitude of the difference you need to cope with.
