You could extend it in a way that is backwards-compatible.
Either way you should consider using e.g. subopt-helper.h, a 300-line
filter of which more than 80 lines are option parsing is not reasonable
at all.
And duplicated code is already today a big maintenance issue,
particularly for such a rarely used features where splitting the
user base might mean that neither will get enough testing to keep it
properly working.
