What would be the advantage of an library interface for you?

Changing vo and ao during playback is currently not supported by
the design of MPlayer. Though it should not be too difficult to add.

Subtitles and vf options changes should be possible... though there
is no interface exported in MPlayer IIRC. Ie the vf chain would need
to be reinitialized.
