Is this modified version acceptable with respect to what you intended?
Please test it.

Changes:
* use %.*s instead of %*.*s
* separate messages for "no driver" and "can't initialize"
* a little logic to make the separate messages possible
* MSGL_WARN for the problem messages
* some slight wording changes
