the doc says that the camera can output jpeg images
with varying degrees of compression (that would also
minimize usb bandwidth requirement).
Why don't you use that mode rather than adding a 
new VD? (that doesn't even belong anymore to mplayer,
but libavcodec (and maybe swscale) )
