Well, I haven't had any reason to change and as I'm not an X expert
and these are custom-built systems, it would take a fair amount of
effort and would undoubtedly break things that I would discover for
months to come.

When I started using MPlayer about a year ago, I was pleasantly
surprised that it worked with the platform I had (well, I had to get a
bigger CPU and redo my MTRRs (after finding out what an MTRR is), but
it beat installing a whole new X.

Back when I upgraded to 4.0.2 (as part of an upgrade spiral that
started with me needing a video card with more than 1M of screen
buffer), I experienced some of the cost of upgrading X. In fact, I
never did actually get rid of its predecessor because I would have had
to replace (find, then replace) all the client programs that are
compiled/linked for it.
