OK, thanks.  I missed that.  I guess there's no way to demonstrate the
problem in stock MPlayer.  I use a local modification that directs the
status display to another window.

BTW, is anyone interested in that feature? It's annoying to me that
the status display interferes with the messages (though it uses the
message facility, it really isn't issuing messages).  I normally use
-verbose, so there are lots of messages.  I like to direct Standard
Output to places where a status display is inappropriate (such as a
file).

So I added an option to direct the status display to a file descriptor
of your choice.
