How is an "audio" group "just a hack"?  Isn't that the whole idea of
groups - if you want to restrict access to a file/device (eg /dev/dsp)
to a specific set of users, add those users to a group with access to
that device.  If you want all users to have access to it, then you can
just make it world writeable.

Where's the problem?  In what way do UNIX permissions get in the way?
Just set them once the way you like, and be done with it.
