Until somewhat recently "set up their soundsystem" required googling 
random wikis, cryptic doxygen documentation, and half-working example 
files, copy/pasting some of them into a ~/.asoundrc, and hoping that it 
works, since there was no chance at all for a regular user to figure 
out the terminology alsa uses, and figure out how to translate "I just 
want sound to stop stuttering and MPlayer to stop showing jerky video" 
into ~/.asoundrc syntax from the scarce docs and random examples.

Fortunately, today, alsa by default works without need for this, as long 
as you have a regular sound setup, i.e. one sound card, etc. :-)
