The dvr-ms demuxer prototype is now at the point where it does recover
AV sync on the dvr-ms (ie original) version of this sample. However it
takes quite a few seconds longer to do so that with the converted
version (converted by DirectShow that is). I've attached 2 files that
show the status line contents when playing both versions.

It seems to me that the mpg version recovers quicker because the
DirectShow conversion process is doing something to the timestamps to
make the output more 'playable'. This section (from line 62 of the mpg
version) highlights what I'm talking about:

the timestamps for both audio and video go down rather than up for a
frame or two and AV sync recovers very quickly after that. None of
this happens when playing the dvr-ms file and the sync takes a few
more seconds to recover.

This probably isnt a big deal but should the asf demuxer attempt to do
anything to the timestamps in these sorts of situations to help the
downstream process recover faster? If so, what sort of thing might
help?
