Only without fixed-vo. When it happens with it, it's a bug. Fortunately,
a patch exists already.

start mplayer as mplayer -vo gl -fixed-vo <list of files>. Press f.
Press enter/>/seek to the end/etc. Watch as mplayer switches back to
window.

Well, according to explanation in this thread it's a "feature" too, and
isn't supposed to work anyway.
