What about disabling uspp (ultra slow seems like an understatement to me) and
mcdeint for --disable-mencoder?

If not, I'll revert tonight.

It was not a question of being "smart", but of how to fix a compilation failure.
And yes, I understand your point that a crashing mplayer executable can be worse
than none at all.
