No, the bug you described was "sound is choppy with the ALSA crap, but
works fine with the ALSA drives as long as MPlayer uses the OSS
interface.".
That's something you could write a bug report for, and that should be
fixable within ALSA.
For general OSS<->ALSA discussions you are more than five years too late.
