It crashes with sigsegv when I try to enable SSA/ASS rendering during 
playback. This won't work with the current implementation. This option should 
only take effect after restart.

Anyway, why do you want to disable ASS rendering ? If it is because of the 
margins, I suggest adding "Add margins for subtitles" checkbox with 2 
editboxes for top and bottom margin width. Btw, it also requires restart, or 
at least video chain reconfiguration.
