The current translation system does need to be replaced, but the gettext
API doesn't look too good; the requirement to set locale is particularly
bad. I think a custom translation system but one which could maybe still
allow translators to use some of the tools related to gettext would be
best. I think I'll send a proposal for such a system in a separate mail.
