I guess they simply want to stream bluray content over network or dvb/atsc;
using mpegts from the start doesn't require them to remux the content.
Space, overhead and user friendlyness aren't a concern for those people.

BTW, I forgot to mention the worst part of it: it seems that the 
interactive part of bluray
is supposed to be implemented as a java application
