Yes seems it reads all files in the directory when starting. That might
be a reason not to have a big cache of unindexed font files as loading
them all on startup could cause a noticeable delay.

I don't understand why you say "In that case there is no need to keep
old fonts" - how is the naming scheme for the files relevant to whether
you want to keep them?
