There are many cases where they're necessary. For example cross
compiling, user-installations, MVC, ...

You shouldn't be so arrogant telling all people using this 
to do "broken things".


In fact, its one of the major advantages of opensource that 
these things are in general possible without massive hacking.

Yeah, for every single library. In a common sysroot build environment,
this raises the amount of manual work at factor 3 ...


BTW: I don't really see any good reason, why we should spend so much 
manual work with maintaining dozens of lines of code in the configure
script, which could be done with an single line.

We can easily expect people to have pkg-config, or - for those who 
don't - supply an own one, which does your hand-written checks.
