pkg-config knows about only a fraction of the libs on my system.  For
those that it does, I've had problems with it in the past.  Recently, I
had to go through editing all *.pc files which had any references to a
now-removed lib (why those pc files referenced a lib that wasn't
even a dependency, I don't even know).

IMHO, it's really unnecessary added complexity for me.
