hmm, it would be better to use $PKG_CONFIG (and set it to 
"pkg-config" if empty), so some could easily overwrite it.
This is really handy if you have to pass some non-standard
pkg-config command without messing up your running system.

I personally rely on this for my automated distro builder, 
which is consequently doing sysroot'ed crosscompiling. It 
needs to filter the output of pkg-config for proper pathes
(in sysroot'ed environments, the whole stuff comes from
some certain $SYSROOT prefix instead of the running system).

Yeah, they're against the latest releases, not yet tested 
against current cvs - perhaps some volounteers ? ;-)
